Skymark Airlines, the third largest company in Japan, just execute the contract for the purchase of four Airbus A380, after the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in November 2010 with European aircraft manufacturer. The growing low cost becomes the first airline to acquire the modern Japanese superjumbo.
The final contract was signed at Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, France, with the participation of the president of Skymark Airlines Shinichi Nishikubo, the president and CEO of Airbus, Tom Enders, the director of Area Customers of Airbus, John Leahy, and Stephane Ginoux, CEO of Airbus Japan.
Delivery of the aircraft is scheduled, said the company last year to 2015, when the airline plans to launch international routes. Skymark far made regular passenger flights on regional routes in Japan and international charter flights to Seoul. Its main base is Tokyo International Airport Haneda. Shinichi Nishikubo
stressed that "with the A380, the most cost efficient aircraft in the world, advanced and environmentally environment will be much more competitive, while providing greater safety. We will be the first Japanese airline to offer a new and unique flying experience, enjoying a relaxing cabin, quieter, more spacious and more comfortable. In addition, the four-A380 will give us greater operational flexibility to be free from ETOPS restrictions, applied to the twin-engine aircraft.
President and CEO of Airbus said, meanwhile, that "the A380 is the most eco-efficient solution that will allow air traffic growth in Japan in a limited capacity."
International Airport Narita is a high-traffic airport, receiving almost all international air traffic in Japan. As a result, Japanese authorities have limited the number of flights that each company can operate from Narita.
With 250,000 flight hours
According to Airbus, more than 10 million passengers have taken the "unique experience" to fly aboard the A380, between 20 major airports around the world. The fleet currently in service with the huge model has accumulated nearly 250,000 flight hours in some 28,000 flights.
Companies Singapore Airlines (SIA), Lufthansa and Air France operate daily this plane at Narita Airport. As of March 27, 2011, SIA will expand its services with the A380 from Narita to Los Angeles. Korean Air has scheduled its first service to this city with the A380 on 1 June.
