First flight of United

United's history began on 6 April 1926, when a small Swallow biplane owned by Walter Varney made the first air mail delivery, landing to the cheers of a crowd in Nevada after flying a circuitous route over hilly terrain. While other aviation legends were the air transport as a challenge and a game to win, Varney was one of the first to recognize its potential as a business.

Varney Varney Air Service was founded in 1926, after securing a contract to carry airmail. The company later sold to United Aircraft and Transport, who adopted the name United Air Lines in 1933. In 1934, Varney, along with his partner Louis Mueller, founded Varney Speed \u200b\u200bLines, a company that was sold and renamed the Continental Airlines in 1937. In the end, both companies would become real giants in the industry, serving hundreds of destinations in the United States and around the world. In May 2010, United and Continental were merged to become the airline leader in the world.
